A new study shows that a popular heart medication, Viagra, can help men struggling with erectile dysfunction. Pfizer Inc. said on Friday it was considering using the drug for the treatment of men who had trouble getting or keeping an erection. The drug has been on the market since 1998.
Viagra, a popular treatment for ED, is a generic version of Viagra® or the brand name Sildenafil Citrate.
Viagra was introduced to the market in 1998 by Eli Lilly and Co., the world's largest pharmaceutical company. But the drug has been on the market for more than a decade and is widely available at CVS, Walgreens and Walmart pharmacies, according to CVS spokeswoman Susan M. Arndt.
In November last year, Pfizer began selling the drug at its own store chain, the CVS stores. A CVS pharmacy spokeswoman said Viagra was available on prescription in its current form and should be priced accordingly.
Viagra is the only drug in the U. S. that has been available for more than a decade, and the only medication approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of ED. It can only be prescribed by a doctor.
Viagra's patent was valid until 1998, when the U. patent for the drug expired. CVS and Walgreens pharmacies are now able to sell the drug as a generic version of Viagra, although the drug is not available by prescription on the U. market.

However, CVS did not respond to a request for comment.
CVS has taken out a new drug application for Viagra, Pfizer Inc. said in a statement.
A spokesman for CVS said, "We are committed to continuing to work with our partners to develop innovative treatments for men with ED that offer a safe and effective alternative to Viagra."

Viagra, CVS's generic, works the same way as the brand-name drug and works by increasing blood flow to the penis, Arndt said. It also helps men with erectile dysfunction.
However, CVS spokeswoman Arndt said, "We have no plans to market this product in the U. and will continue to sell it at a lower price."
